In Search of the Beyond
With gentle yet surprising power of persuasion, "In Search of the Beyond" by Carlo Carreto directs our attention to God. Drawing from his experience and the experience of the great seekers of all time from Abraham to Teilhard De Chardin, Carlo Carreto unfolds the mystery of God and his call with remarkable simplicity, imagery, breadth of vision and depth of insight. The book leads us through the agony and ecstasy of coming to terms with the reality of God. The experience opens our hearts and transforms our pride to the lowliness of a loving heart; and thus we are led to the threshold of the Beyond – God as he is, the Invisible, the Eternal, the Unchanging. Each chapter reads as a meditation that leads to or at least prepares us for the experience of the Beyond, described as an experience of God’s embracing love, like the warm darkness that bathe the child in its mother’s womb. This love is the divine milieu mused and sang by poets, sages and mystics of the ages. Living the Beyond in the here and now comes with knowing Jesus – the door to the Beyond – and coming to grips with his vision of life summarized in the Beatitudes. In the light of the Beyond the Beatitudes unveil a fresh, radical and challenging way of living now. Living them offers fresh hope for a world broken by terrorism and impoverished by globalization. It gives back to the world its soul, the ground that transcends nationality, race, culture, religion. From this ground springs forth the oasis of a common destiny where all can drink together in peace. One who has experienced the Beyond finds meaning – ultimate meaning. To have an ultimate meaning in life is to have a kind of identity, belonging and purpose. It explains everything in our lives, bringing all the fragments of our lives into an integrated unity with all of reality. It provides well-being, security and peace which cannot be taken away. Ultimate meaning comes from the Beyond – God, the absolute, the sum of all reality. |
